“Glaçon râpé” (Shave Ice)
Glaçon Râpé ! Glaçon Râpé !
There was a time when
shaved ice sellers would drive their colorful motorbikes from house to house to
sell their fruity flavored homemade syrups onto the shaved ice on either a stick
or in a cup.
The Glaçon Râpé surprises
and at the same time amaze many tourists. It is commonly seen at the beach or
at the market (the fair) and is very popular in times of strong heat.
More precisely, it is a
sorbet made of crushed or grated ice by pressing a large cube of ice with a
plastic sheet, perfumed with syrups of all kinds (strawberry, almond, coconut,
tamarind, cane juice, etc.). In the end, we've got a sweet retro dessert with
the colors of the National flag. This is quite an art!
With that intense heat at
the Caudan Waterfront Port Louis shave ice is a must.
